If you’re based in the UK and are looking for a healthy shake to get more calories in your diet, then I think you’ll enjoy reading my XL Nutrition Xtra Protein & Carbs review.

I recently tested about 70 different weight gainers on the UK market. Many of them contained loads of cheap filler ingredients that probably did me more harm than good.

So when I found this safe and simple protein and carbs supplement, I was intrigued to see how beneficial it was, as well as how easily it mixed and how good it tasted.

After trying XL Nutrition Xtra Protein & Carbs and putting it through its paces, here are my thoughts on the product.

XL Nutrition Xtra Protein and Carbs falls somewhere between a protein shake and a mass gainer. If I had to put a label on it, I’d say that it’s a moderate-calorie post-workout shake, although you can certainly drink it at any time of the day for an extra calorie boost.

In other words, Xtra Protein & Carbs has all the nutrition you could ask for from a protein shake, but it’s not going to increase your body weight as fast as a mass gainer would (unless you take multiple servings per day).

Each serving is 100g, which provides lots of quality ingredients and calories.

For the price, you’re getting a lot of different supplements in one formula. When you buy Xtra Protein & Carbs, you’ll no longer need to buy creatine or glutamine, and you can probably make great gains without a protein powder.

After all, with 33g of whey protein per serving, XL protein and Carbs has more protein than your typical big-brand protein shake.

XL Nutrition Xtra Protein & Carbs Ingredient Quality

The scoop from XL Nutrition Xtra Protein & Carbs

The first thing that jumps out at me is the carb-to-protein ratio; it’s the perfect ratio for a meal replacement or for use in conjunction with a meal, especially because it also contains 25 different vitamins and minerals. 

For example, I like to mix Xtra Protein & Carbs with my oats on a morning to bump up the protein and calorie content. And, of course, to make my porridge less plain.

The carbohydrates themselves consist of ultrafine oat powder and maltodextrin, both of which are easy to digest, meaning that Xtra Protein and Carbs doesn’t sit heavy on your stomach like some other shakes tend to do, such as Boditronics Mass Attack Juggernaut.

On the protein side of things, you get 33g per serving from whey concentrate and whey isolate, enabling you to take advantage of the rapidly digesting amino acids at any time of the day. After all, when you’re trying to build muscle, there’s no bad time to drink quality protein like whey!

I also like that each XL Xtra Protein and Carbs serving has 7g of glutamine for soreness reduction and faster muscle recovery. This makes Xtra Protein & Carbs the ideal post-workout shake because it contains everything you need to kickstart the recovery process so that you can build muscle.

Creatine is the final ingredient, which is included at a scientifically optimal 5g dosage. You actually get a blend of creatine monohydrate and creatine ethyl ester, meaning that you might get even faster creatine absorption than usual.

As I’ve come to realise from writing this XL Xtra Protein and Carbs review, this supplement really does live up to its name because you’re getting a lot of extras—glutamine, creatine, vitamins, and minerals—in addition to a quality baseline formula. You don’t get that with the likes of Matrix Monster Calories.

XL Nutrition Protein and Carbs is packed to the brim with muscle-building ingredients. If you drink your shakes consistently alongside a good diet, then you’ll likely see some noticeable improvements in size and strength, especially if you’re just used to getting by on regular protein shakes.

Because Xtra Protein & Carbs contains 7g of glutamine and 33g of whey protein per serving, you’ll probably notice a reduction in muscle soreness after your workouts.

While this soreness reduction is beneficial for everyone who trains, it’s especially good for those who like to lift frequently because the quicker you can recover, the sooner you can get back in the gym, enabling you to maximise your muscle growth.

Of course, even if you don’t have hardcore training ambitions, XL Nutrition Xtra Protein & Carbs will still provide you with that all-important muscle fuel to help you get the most from your workouts.

Oftentimes, shakes that contain protein and carbs can be a bit dodgy when it comes to mixability. Plus, they don’t usually taste the best (quite grainy, I find).

But as I’ve realised after testing 60+ different high-calorie shakes, not every supplement fits this stereotype. I was chuffed to finally find a protein and carb shake that tastes amazing and mixes really well in just a shaker bottle.

I went for chocolate, and it really did have that milkshake-like taste to it, which was honestly a bit surprising.

When I place my next order, I’m definitely going to try strawberry, which seems to be a firm favourite.

The shakes taste really nice with either milk or water, but using milk obviously gives you a ticker texture and a creamier shake, which I personally like.

As I mentioned earlier in my XL Protein and Carbs review, I’ve been using the powder in conjunction with my porridge on a morning to add more flavour and bulk up the calorie, carb, and protein content.

How To Use XL Nutrition Xtra Protein & Carbs

XL Nutrition recommends mixing 3 slightly heaped scoops (100g of powder) with 400 ml of liquid. Depending on how precise you want to be, you might wish to weigh out the powder before making your shake, but it’s definitely not a requirement.

Just note that If you’re pre-making your Xtra Protein & Carbs shake for later, you should drink it within 3 hours. So If that isn’t possible, you could just put your powder in your shaker and then add water. Just make sure that your shaker is completely dry so that the powder doesn’t stick to the bottom.

As mentioned, XL Nutrition Protein and Carbs is an ideal post-workout shake because of its excellent protein-to-carbs ratio and additional muscle-building ingredients (creatine and glutamine).

However, you can also enjoy a shake any time you want a hit of carbs and protein. That’s what a lot of people do. So you could use the powder with your oats like me, or drink it at work if you don’t want to go too long between meals.

I’d drink 1-3 shakes each day, depending on how easily you can get calories from your regular diet. A good plan would be to have one shake after your workout—to stimulate post-workout anabolism—and then another sometime in the day between your meals so that you can get an extra protein serving.

To keep my XL Nutrition Protein and Carbs review completely honest, I’m going to go over a few potential drawbacks of this supplement.

If you’re a massive hardgainer that really struggles to put on mass, then the 386 calories from Xtra Protein & Carbs might not be sufficient for you to bulk up. 

Obviously, taking multiple servings would likely fix this problem. However, you might prefer a shake with more calories per serving, such as XL Nutrition’s other product Xtra Mass (see my XL Nutrition Xtra Mass review for more info).

Additionally, if you like to take your creatine separately, then XL Nutrition Protein and Carbs is probably not right for you because each serving does have 5 grams of creatine.

Other than these potential drawbacks, I can’t find any faults with this XL Protein and Carbs powder.

Is XL Nutrition Xtra Protein and Carbs a Good Buy For UK Gym-Goers?

With so many different supplements on the market—each promising great results—it can be hard to choose a good protein and carb supplement.

What I like about XL Nutrition is that they let their ingredients do the talking. While you probably won’t see any (bought and paid for) fitness influencers using Xtra Protein & Carbs, this supplement contains quality nutrients that will help you reach your muscle-building goals.

What more can I say?

I loved the taste, and the mixability was on point. If you want quality protein and carbs for a fair price, this is the supplement for you.
