Weider Mega Mass 4000 is one of the oldest weight gainers on the market. And for many years, I was definitely not a fan because it had loads of sugar and was quite expensive for what you got.

Well, it seems that times may have changed. While Joe Weider’s weight gainer might not be the best cheap mass gainer, it’s definitely improved in quality a lot, and I’m very excited to give it a try.

Weider Mega Mass 4000 Nutrition Information

I’ve got to admit, I found the Mega Mass 4000 ingredient label a bit confusing at first because they give every word and ingredient in about 6 different languages, so most of the words on the back of the bag didn’t make sense.

However, after a minute or so, I was able to find the nutrition facts for each 150g serving. They list the nutrition info when mixed with water and when mixed with milk. So since I’m reviewing Mega Mass 4000 and not cow’s milk, I’m going to stick with the nutritional values when mixed with water, just like I did in my Vitol Russian Bear 5000 Weight Gainer review.

150g of powder, we are told, is equal to about 2.5 scoops. Personally, I like to weigh out my powder to be extra precise for my reviews, but if you’re just bulking, you can probably eyeball it and be just fine.

So, per serving, we get the following:

  • 549 calories
  • 30g of protein
  • 97g of carbs
  • 18g of sugar
  • 3.1g of fat
  • 3g of creatine
  • 5mg of zinc
  • 75μg of iodine
  • 7mg of iron
  • 3mg of pantothenic acid
  • 100μg of folic acid
  • 0.7mg of vitamin B6
  • 8mg of niacin
  • 0.7mg of vitamin B2
  • 0.55mg of vitamin B1
  • 40mg of vitamin C
  • 6mg of vitamin E

Weider Mega Mass 4000 Ingredients

As some of the old Weider Mega Mass 4000 reviews will tell you, this supplement didn’t always have the best reputation for its ingredients. Sure, it would still put weight on you, but you were basically paying for protein and sugar.

As you’re about to find out, though, this Weider mass gainer has come a long way and made some big improvements in the nutrition department.

Carbohydrate Blend

While protein is still king in the bodybuilding world, carbohydrates should form the basis of any decent mass gainer because carbs are easy to consume and are great for increasing your body weight.

Per 150g serving, Weider Mega Mass 4000 includes 97g of carbs from maize maltodextrin, native wheat starch, oat flour, and native potato starch.

This Weider weight gainer, as you can see, has both fast-acting and slow-digesting carbohydrates so that you can achieve rapid post-workout glycogen resynthesis and get that steady stream of energy to keep your body feeling energetic over a longer period of time.

Only 18g of the carbohydrates are sugar, which is around 20% of the total. This is a big improvement compared to the old formula, and it’s clear that Weider Nutrition has really progressed with its supplements in recent years.

Protein Blend

As I mentioned earlier in my Weider mass gainer review, protein is the most important muscle-building ingredient in any mass gainer.

However, many hardgainers get so enamoured by the calorie content of weight gainers that they forget to look at the actual proteins that are used, meaning that they end up drinking a bunch of soy and sugar!

Thankfully, Weider uses only premium proteins in their Mega Mass 4000 formula—and they go beyond just whey.

In addition to the rapidly-digesting whey protein concentrate, Mega Mass 4000 contains two slow-digesting sources as well, namely milk protein isolate and egg whites, so that your body can benefit and grow from a consistent supply of amino acids.

While I would have liked to see slightly more protein per serving, I think that 30g of protein for 549 calories is very good indeed. And anyway, if you use milk, the protein content jumps to around 49g, which is more than enough for just about anyone.

It’s great that Weider includes an amino acid breakdown at the bottom of the bag so that we can verify that we’re getting an effective muscle-building shake. Per 100g, there’s nearly 10g of leucine, which is the key amino acid for stimulating muscle protein synthesis, which is what leads to hypertrophy.

Fats and Vitamins

I like that Weider Giant Mega Mass 4000 is low in fat, not because fats are bad, but because excessive fat can compete with the carbs and protein for absorption.

This “competition” is fine in the context of a whole foods meal, but it’s not what you want from a post-workout shake or liquid calories.

The whole point of a weight gainer, in my opinion, is to provide a convenient calorie source that you can drink quickly and easily to better meet your calorie and macro targets.

Gainers that are high in fat are harder to drink and digest, which isn’t what you want from a bodybuilding perspective, especially if you’re consuming 3+ other meals.

Weider Mega Mass 4000 also has a decent dose of a variety of vitamins and minerals, including zinc, iodine, niacin, vitamin C, and vitamin B6. While these micronutrients won’t put slabs of mass on your physique, it’s always good to get some micronutriton for the calories that you take on board.

Not everyone likes creatine in their weight gainer (I personally don’t). But either way, you have to admit that getting creatine along with the extra protein and calories is very convenient.

In this case, Weider has formulated Mega Mass 4000 with 3.4g of Creapure creatine monohydrate, which is one of the purest creatines that you can get.

While some people might moan at the fact that we only get 3g of creatine rather than 5g, I think this is actually a good thing because some hardgainers will be drinking two shakes per day, meaning that they’ll end up with plenty of creatine for their bulking goals.

It’s still wise to have a separate tub of creatine on hand for the times when you don’t take Mega Mass 4000, or if you end up moving to another mass gainer that doesn’t have any creatine.

Weider Mega Mass 4000 Taste and Flavours

So, Mega Mass 4000 has come a long way in the ingredient department, but has the taste improved?

For me, yes. I went for the Chocolate flavour and found it to be refreshing and nicely sweet. Unlike before, it wasn’t overpowering and artificial. I’d gladly drink this shake after every workout.

While I have had better-tasting shakes in my time, I’d still say that Mega Mass 4000 by Weider is tastier than average, especially when you mix it with milk!

The texture is nice and smooth (not grainy), which is just what I like. You don’t feel like you’re drinking a 500+ calorie shake (800+ when you use milk), which makes it easy to get in those extra bulking calories without making yourself feel full or nauseous.

Weider Mega Mass 4000 Mixability and Digestion

As you can probably guess from my comments above, the mixability is spot on because the shakes don’t create any big clumps, which is quite common with other weight gainers.

I found Joe Weider Mega Mass 4000 easy to whip up in a simple shaker bottle, meaning that you can easily bring it to the gym with you to get a perfectly-timed post-workout shake.

While Mega Mass 4000 was certainly more filling than a regular protein shake, I didn’t feel sluggish or bloated after drinking it, even when I mixed the powder with milk.

This is a testament to Weider’s new lean mass formula. Although Mega Mass 4000 is still great for hardgainers, the calories and carbs aren’t needlessly high, so you’re getting quality over quantity here.

Weider Mega Mass 4000 Side Effects

So, does this Joe Weider weight gainer have any side effects that you should be concerned about?

Well, if you’ve read my Weider Weight Gainer review thus far, you’ll know that this supplement has a simple formula with no fillers or hidden ingredients.

As such, you’re very unlikely to experience any side effects when taking this Joe Weider mass gainer.

While this gainer does have creatine, it’s a very pure kind (Creapure), so you won’t experience that much (if any) bloating because of the enhanced absorption.

Still, if you’ve never used weight gainers before (or if you have very poor lactose tolerance), then you might experience some mild stomach discomfort after drinking Mega Mass 4000, but this also applies to any other weight gainer.

At the end of the day, Weider Mega Mass 4000 is just liquid calories with some creatine, so it’s very unlikely to cause you any problems if you use it sensibly (no more than 2 servings per day, in my opinion).

I have to be honest and say that the Weider Mega mass 4000 price is a bit expensive compared to some other gainers. Maybe that’s just because I ordered it from the UK (Weider is an American brand).

Either way, Mega Mass 4000 definitely isn’t cheap.

But that said, I do think that you get what you pay for.

The big 4kg bag that I got comes with 26 servings, which is close to a month’s supply if you have one shake per day.

It’s always good to assess a mass gainer’s value on a per-serving basis because some gainers might be cheap, but they have barely any servings in their tiny tubs!

One thing I’ve always liked about Mega Mass 4000, even though I wasn't a fan of the old formula, is the big bags that the powder comes in. It means you don’t have to order another mass gainer every single week.

Conclusion: Will This Joe Weider Weight Gainer Get You Jacked?

While hardgainers still need to dedicate themselves to the gym to get great results, Weider Mega Mass 4000 will definitely be a helping hand during your weight gain journey.

This new and improved lean mass formula has an ideal amount of calories (549) for putting on quality weight. While there are certainly higher calorie gainers on the market, like True Mass from BSN, this Weider mass gainer still packs a good punch because it has 97g of carbs and 30g of protein per serving, which is a good carb-to-protein ratio for a hardgainer.

While taste is subjective, I personally enjoyed every Weider weight gainer shake that I drank, and there’s a good chance you will too. While I’ll probably be sticking to my regular mass gainer, I’d still recommend giving Mega Mass 4000 a try if you want to see how it works for you.
