USN has a reputation for being a hardcore supplement company that mainly caters to bodybuilders looking to build maximum mass.

Like many people, I’ve been following the plant based mass gainer market for a while, and I haven’t been impressed with the quality of its offerings.

However, Wholefood Gainer from USN recently caught my eye for its pure ingredients, high protein content, and quality amino acid composition.

After trying USN’s other two weight gainers, I decided to get myself a tub of Wholefood Gainer so that I could give my opinion on the taste, mixability, and ingredient quality for those following a plant-based diet.

USN Wholefood Gainer is a plant-based weight gain formula designed for those who lift weights and want to build muscle. Unlike other vegan and vegetarian gainers, Wholefood Gainer doesn’t have soy, additives, preservatives, or junk ingredients.

There are also 8.3g of fat in each shake, so Wholefood Gainer has very balanced macros, enabling you to stay healthy while building muscle.

While this shake does have the potential to be a meal replacement macro-wise, gaining weight requires a surplus of calories, which is why combining Whofood Gainer with wholefood meals is so effective.

Does USN Wholefood Gainer Taste Nice?

Plant-based nutritional shakes don’t have a particularly good reputation when it comes to taste, and that’s putting it politely.

So you can imagine that I was pretty shocked to find out that USN Wholefood Gainer tastes absolutely fantastic, almost like a chocolate milkshake.

I think this is a testament to the clean ingredients used within the formula and also the lack of additives and preservatives.

If you come from a background of artificial protein shakes, then you’re going to love the taste of Wholefood Gainer.

Unlike with other shakes, I didn’t need to use any kind of milk when mixing and drinking USN Wholefood Gainer; it tasted great with just water.

In general, all of Ultimate Sports Nutrition’s (USN) shakes taste pretty good, such as USN Muscle Fuel Anabolic and Hyperbolic Mass from USN, which are both high in calories and protein as well.

Does USN Wholefood Gainer Mix Easily?

As with taste, plant-based protein shakes and mass gainers have a poor reputation when it comes to mixability because of their earthy ingredients, which can often produce a very grainy texture.

Thankfully, USN Wholefood Gainer mixes really well in either a shaker or a blender. 

This is both surprising and pleasing.

Surprising because 471 calories is a lot, and you wouldn’t necessarily expect the mixability to be this clean (no clumps).

And it’s pleasing because, let’s be honest, nobody likes to drink mass gainers that are full of lumps.

You can mix Wholefood Gainer in a shaker for convenience or, for more customisation, you can use a blender and add some of your own ingredients to bulk up the nutritional content, such as berries or almond butter.

When Should You Take USN Wholefood Gainer?

As I mentioned earlier in my USN Wholefood Gainer review, post-workout is the best time to drink a shake because your muscles are highly receptive to amino acids after training.

If you want to maximise your time in the gym, then it’s a good idea to drink Wholefood Gainer within 30 minutes of your session, especially if it's been a while since your last meal (or, more specifically, since your last protein serving).

You can also use USN Wholefood Gainer as a snack between meals, which is useful for getting in the extra calories that you’ll need to gain weight.

Depending on your calorie requirement, you could drink Wholefood Gainer 1-2 times per day. I think once will be enough for most people since each shake does contain nearly 500 calories, which is likely sufficient to put you in a calorie surplus.
