USN has a reputation for being a hardcore supplement company that mainly caters to bodybuilders looking to build maximum mass.

Like many people, I’ve been following the plant based mass gainer market for a while, and I haven’t been impressed with the quality of its offerings.

However, Wholefood Gainer from USN recently caught my eye for its pure ingredients, high protein content, and quality amino acid composition.

After trying USN’s other two weight gainers, I decided to get myself a tub of Wholefood Gainer so that I could give my opinion on the taste, mixability, and ingredient quality for those following a plant-based diet.

So if you’re looking for a lactose free weight gainer in the UK, then I think you’ll find my USN Wholefood Gainer review quite enlightening.

What Is USN Wholefood Gainer?

Closeup of the supplement facts from Wholefood Gainer from USN

USN Wholefood Gainer is a plant-based weight gain formula designed for those who lift weights and want to build muscle. Unlike other vegan and vegetarian gainers, Wholefood Gainer doesn’t have soy, additives, preservatives, or junk ingredients.

USN Wholefood Gainer is also low in sugar—less than 1g per serving—and makes use of cocoa powder for flavour, as well as stevia. So, if you’re in the market for a healthy, natural shake to increase your body weight, then USN Wholefood Gainer could be a good option.

Each 2kg tub has 16 servings, and you get 471 calories in each shake, which could easily put your body in that all-important calorie surplus so that you can gain weight healthily.

The nutrition facts for USN Wholefood Gainer

While many mass gainers try to outdo each other by cramming in as many calories as possible, USN Wholefood Gainer takes a different approach and instead focuses on quality sources of nutrition rather than sheer caloric volume.

Before we get into the benefits of Wholefood Gainer, let’s have a look at the nutrition facts. Each 125g serving (3 scoops) contains the following:

  • 471 calories
  • 64g of carbs
  • 8.3g of fat
  • 30g of protein

How Does USN Wholefood Gainer Work?

USN Wholefood Gainer works by increasing your calorie, carbohydrate, and protein intake with one convenient daily shake. These extra daily calories put your body in an energy surplus, which ultimately leads to weight and muscle gain.

Providing a combination of rice protein concentrate and pea protein isolate, Wholefood Gainer gives your muscles a broad range of amino acids so that they can recover from exercise and grow both stronger and larger.

Plant-based supplements, like USN Wholefood Gainer, that contain multiple protein sources are generally better than ones that rely on a single source of protein. This is because, when you mix plant-based proteins, you get a more complete amino acid profile, which is better for building muscle.

For carbohydrates, USN Wholefood Gainer utilises rice flour, sweet potato powder, tapioca starch, and oat flour. These complex, slow-digesting carbs provide your body with a steady supply of energy so that you don’t feel lethargic after drinking your shake.

Because of the quality ingredients contained within Wholefood Gainer, you can take it any time of the day. However, as I’ll talk about more later on in my USN Wholefood Gainer review, the best time to drink this shake from a muscle-building perspective is definitely post-workout.

Is USN Wholefood Gainer Effective?

A weight gainer is only as effective as its ingredients. And as we’ve seen, Wholefood Gainer ticks all the boxes when it comes to muscle-building potential.

The scoop size for USN Wholefood Gainer

With 30g of quality protein per serving from rice and peas, your body will have a wide range of amino acids at its disposal that it can use to repair and grow muscle tissue, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to gain mass.

Similarly, with 64g of quality carbs per serving and less than 1g of sugar, Wholefood Gainer provides your body with quality fuel and calories that will improve your workouts and help you to gain weight.

There are also 8.3g of fat in each shake, so Wholefood Gainer has very balanced macros, enabling you to stay healthy while building muscle.

Of course, to get the most from USN Wholefood Gainer or any other nutritional shake, you need to drink it consistently in addition to your regular meals. While this shake does have the potential to be a meal replacement macro-wise, gaining weight requires a surplus of calories, which is why combining Whofood Gainer with wholefood meals is so effective.

Does USN Wholefood Gainer Taste Nice?

Plant-based nutritional shakes don’t have a particularly good reputation when it comes to taste, and that’s putting it politely.

So you can imagine that I was pretty shocked to find out that USN Wholefood Gainer tastes absolutely fantastic, almost like a chocolate milkshake.

I think this is a testament to the clean ingredients used within the formula and also the lack of additives and preservatives.

If you come from a background of artificial protein shakes, then you’re going to love the taste of Wholefood Gainer.

Unlike with other shakes, I didn’t need to use any kind of milk when mixing and drinking USN Wholefood Gainer; it tasted great with just water.

In general, all of Ultimate Sports Nutrition’s (USN) shakes taste pretty good, such as USN Muscle Fuel Anabolic and Hyperbolic Mass from USN, which are both high in calories and protein as well.

Does USN Wholefood Gainer Mix Easily?

As with taste, plant-based protein shakes and mass gainers have a poor reputation when it comes to mixability because of their earthy ingredients, which can often produce a very grainy texture.

Thankfully, USN Wholefood Gainer mixes really well in either a shaker or a blender.

This is both surprising and pleasing.

Surprising because 471 calories is a lot, and you wouldn’t necessarily expect the mixability to be this clean (no clumps).

And it’s pleasing because, let’s be honest, nobody likes to drink mass gainers that are full of lumps.

You can mix Wholefood Gainer in a shaker for convenience or, for more customisation, you can use a blender and add some of your own ingredients to bulk up the nutritional content, such as berries or almond butter.

When Should You Take USN Wholefood Gainer?

As I mentioned earlier in my USN Wholefood Gainer review, post-workout is the best time to drink a shake because your muscles are highly receptive to amino acids after training.

If you want to maximise your time in the gym, then it’s a good idea to drink Wholefood Gainer within 30 minutes of your session, especially if it's been a while since your last meal (or, more specifically, since your last protein serving).

You can also use USN Wholefood Gainer as a snack between meals, which is useful for getting in the extra calories that you’ll need to gain weight.

Depending on your calorie requirement, you could drink Wholefood Gainer 1-2 times per day. I think once will be enough for most people since each shake does contain nearly 500 calories, which is likely sufficient to put you in a calorie surplus.

Conclusion: Is USN Wholefood Gainer Good For Gaining Muscle?

A back view of USN Wholefood Gainer

USN Wholefood Gainer is a quality, nutrient-dense mass gainer that’s sure to shake up the plant-based supplement market.

My favourite feature is the combination of pea protein isolate and brown rice protein. This is because combining plant-based protein sources is a great way to bulk up the amino acid profile of a mass gainer.

Also, with quality carbs like oats and sweet potato, this natural, low-sugar nutritional shake from USN is ideal for fueling your body with slow-release, stable energy that will satisfy your hunger and give you plenty of energy.

And as any of the USN Wholefood Gainer reviews will tell you, this shake tastes amazing and mixes like a dream. If you’re based in the UK and can get your hands on this product, I definitely recommend giving it a try.
