I used my first Sci-MX supplement about 12 years ago. I think I ordered it from Argos. I don’t know if they still sell supplements, but I know that Sci-MX—one of the original UK supplement companies—is still around.

I’ve always been impressed at the quality-to-price ratio of Sci-Mx supplements. While I don’t think that this Sci-Mx mass gainer is the absolute cream of the crop, you’re getting a good amount of protein, carbs, and calories for your money.

I recently ordered a bag of chocolate Sci-Mx Total Mass and decided to put it to the test. So, in this Sci-Mx mass gainer review, you’ll learn who this supplement is for as well as who should avoid it.

Sci-Mx Total Mass Ingredient Analysis

The information on the bag about Sci Mx Total Mass Gainer

Sci-Mx Total Mass is a mid-calorie weight gainer that contains 478 calories, 81g of carbs, 32g of protein, and 2.9g of fat—solid macros for gaining weight.

This Sci-Mx weight gainer doesn’t have a bunch of extras like creatine and glutamine, meaning that it has a very low price per serving, roughly £1.25.

That said, Sci-Mx Total Mass does contain 5 digestive enzymes so that you can make the best possible use of the 478 calories contained within its formula.

The protein is derived from whey concentrate and soy isolate, for a total of 33g. While the protein-to-carbs ratio is very good, some bodybuilders prefer to steer clear of soy completely.

Yet, many lifters seem to do okay on soy protein.

In terms of carbohydrates, maltodextrin is the sole carb source in Sci-Mx Total Mass, which is pretty standard for a weight gainer in this price range.

While it often gets a bad rep, maltodextrin is generally well-tolerated by most seasoned supplement users, making it a good choice for post-workout glycogen replenishment. You can see my review of Kinetica Oat Gain if you want to learn about a supplement that uses oats for carbohydrates.

I like that the fat content of Sci-Mx Total Mass is low. Not because I’m against fat—not at all—but because too much fat can slow down protein absorption, which isn’t what you want if you’re taking Sci-Mx Total Mass after your workout.

Sci-Mx Total Mass Taste, Flavours, and Mixability

Sci-Mx Total Mass is available in either chocolate or strawberry flavours. So, while there’s not much variety on offer, the flavours are a pretty safe bet.

For me, this Sci-Mx mass gainer does taste fairly good, slightly above average, I’d say. It’s not going to win any taste awards, but you can drink it without any complaints, which, honestly, is about all you can ask for from a weight gainer.

The mixability is good, which is probably aided by the fact that the serving size (125g) is smaller than that of your typical high-calorie mass gainer.

You just mix 3 scoops with 400 ml of water and shake. Sci-Mx recommends shaking for 10 seconds, but I always do at least 20 seconds to make sure the powder is thoroughly mixed.

Overall, Sci-Mx Total Mass passes the mixability and taste tests. It’s not top of the class, but you get a decent-tasting shake for not a lot of money, which brings us nicely to the next section of my Sci-Mx Total Mass review.

Sci-Mx Total Mass Price

If there’s one big advantage that Sci-Mx Total Mass has over the competition, it’s price.

Although I think there are better products out there, like PhD Advanced Mass, Sci-Mx Total Mass does offer very good value for money. I paid about 20 quid for a 2kg bag, so that’s roughly 16 servings, which is not bad.

I think one reason why Sci-Mx offers great value for money is that they’re not necessarily a big-name brand—at least not outside of the UK. As such, there isn’t loads of hype around their products, which ultimately results in a lower price point for me and you.

Considering that the cost of just about everything is going up these days, it’s good to see that Sci-Mx has stayed true to its good-value roots by offering Total Mass at a fair price point.

Who Should Take Sci-Mx Total Mass?

If you’re looking for a cheap source of extra calories to put your body in an energy surplus and get the job done, then Sci-Mx Total Mass is a good choice.

Unlike the newer supplement companies that seem to be cropping up everywhere, Sci-Mx has been around for over a decade, and the brand has a really solid reputation in the UK.

While their mass gainer isn’t quite as action-packed as others, it has enough protein and carbs to fuel weight gain and help you build muscle.

You likely won’t be wowed by the taste, but you certainly shouldn’t have any trouble drinking these good-quality Sci-Mx shakes, either.

Who Should Avoid Sci-Mx Total Mass?

The scoop inside the bag of Sci Mx mass gainer

If you’re a hardgainer who has a really high calorie requirement, then you’ll probably want a more calorie-dense supplement than Sci-Mx Total Mass.

While you could just take an extra serving, some people prefer to have well over 500 calories in each shake so that they can put on mass more efficiently. You can check out my Reflex Nutrition Instant Mass Heavyweight review if you’re looking for a quality UK supplement that has over 1,000 calories per serving.

Additionally, if you’re not keen on soy protein and are seeking a supplement that only uses milk proteins like whey and casein, then you’re probably best off giving this Sci-Mx weight gainer a miss.

Conclusion: Will This Sci-Mx Mass Gainer Help You Build More Muscle?

Although Sci-Mx Total Mass might not have all the bells and whistles of the more action-packed weight gainers, it still contains proven ingredients that will help you gain muscle.

Checking in at 478 calories, 81g of carbs, and 33g of protein, this Sci-Mx mass gainer will make a solid contribution toward your calorie surplus.

As I said in my Sci-Mx Total Mass review, the taste, while good enough, didn’t blow me away. But if you’re wanting to bulk up on a budget and are looking for a cheap and convenient calorie source, then Sci-Mx Total Mass is a good choice.
