I’m always on the lookout for the best weight gainer shakes. Usually, though, I focus exclusively on UK products. But every now and again, when something special catches my eye, I’ll make an exception and review a US supplement.

So, in my Rule 1 Mass Gainer review, you’ll learn about all the pros and cons of this 1,260-calorie supplement. Is R1 Mass Gainer bigger and better than the rest? Let’s find out!

Rule 1 Mass Gainer Nutrition Facts

Rule 1 Mass Gainer is described as “calorie-packed protein”, which really captures the essence of what a mass gainer should be, a simple yet effective formula for gaining weight. Transparent Labs weight gainer is another example of this.

The Rule 1 Mass Gainer nutrition facts

I’m all for innovation, but sometimes, doing the basics really well can set a supplement apart from the rest.

So here’s what you’re getting with each 325g R1 Mass Gainer serving:

  • 1260 calories
  • 254g of carbs
  • 40g of protein
  • 8g of fat
  • 14g of sugar
  • 7g of fibre
  • 1g of creatine monohydrate

One thing to note about this Rule 1 Gainer is that the serving size is huge. But then again, with over 1,200 calories per serving, that’s to be expected. And anyway, as you’ll learn later on in my R1 Mass Gainer review, this supplement mixes really well, as does the mass gainer by Crazy Nutrition.

Rule 1 Mass Gainer Ingredients

Overall, I’m really impressed with Rule 1 Mass Gainer’s ingredients. However, I think there are a couple of places for improvement.

The Rule 1 Mass Gainer ingredients

Per serving, you get 40g of protein (from whey concentrate, whey isolate, and whey hydrolysate), which many researchers believe to be the optimal dosage for a post-workout shake.

And while the protein itself is of absolute grade-A quality—it includes 9g of naturally occurring BCAAs—I would have liked to see slightly more protein given the 1200+ calories per serving.

Still, for a hardgainer, a 6:1 carb-to-protein ratio could be just what they need to put on quality muscle mass.

The carbohydrate blend consists of organic rice bran and pea starch in addition to maltodextrin, so you’re getting both fast-acting carbs and slower-digesting ones, giving your muscles rapid glycogen resynthesis after a workout and sustained energy throughout the day.

My only real complaint is the creatine. Or should I say the lack thereof? 1g of creatine? Really Rule 1?

1g of creatine isn’t worth talking about. But on the positive side, it’s not going to do you any harm, either. So let’s brush that under the carpet and carry on because overall, this Rule 1 weight gainer is an excellent supplement for bulking up, as is Naked Mass, which is more expensive than R1 Mass Gainer.

Rule 1 Mass Gainer Mixability and Taste

For such a high-calorie gainer, I was surprised at how good Rule 1 R1 Mass Gainer tastes and by how well it mixes. I reckon a large part of this is because Rule 1 doesn’t include any creamers or cheap fillers in their mass gainer.

Anyway, since the 5.5 lb tubs of R1 Mass Gainier were on offer (buy 1 get 1 free), I decided to pick up a tub of the Chocolate Fudge and a tub of the Vanilla Cream to see how they tasted.

If the offer has ended, I think you can still get a big 11 lb bag for around the same price as two 5.5 lb tubs. I just wanted to try a couple of different flavours for my Rule 1 R1 Mass Gainer review!

I ended up getting a big 11 lb bag myself afterwards because I think this supplement is just great value for money, considering the calories and macros on offer.

I’d describe the flavours as tasty yet light; sweet enough to satisfy my picky taste buds, but not overpowering or artificial.

I preferred Chocolate Fudge over Vanilla Cream, but that’s probably because I really like chocolate and not because one flavour is necessarily better than the other. Taste, after all, is very subjective.

How Long Does Rule 1 Mass Gainer Take To Work?

It depends on you’re starting point mainly. If you’re really skinny, then you’re obviously going to gain weight faster than someone who’s been dedicated to bodybuilding for decades.

Still, if you drink your Rule 1 Gainer on a daily basis, then I definitely believe that it’s possible to gain a few pounds in the first couple of weeks.

In a couple of months, I’d say that gains of 5 to 10 lbs are very much possible given the right training and diet, which brings me to my next point.

If you truly want to gain weight, make sure to use your R1 Mass Gainer in addition to your meals and not in replacement of them. While it’s fine to have something like 3-5 meals and a shake, you don’t want to eat at maintenance calories or slide into an energy deficit.

Obviously, with a whopping 1260 calories per shake, this Rule 1 Mass Gainer makes it pretty hard not to gain weight. It has a similar amount of calories as Dymatize Super Mass Gainer, except it’s cheaper.

What I Didn’t Like About Rule 1 Gainer

Because Rule 1 R1 Mass Gainer has a simple yet effective formula, there isn’t really much that I can complain about. But to keep my reviews balanced, I always try to find at least one fault with any weight gainer that I try.

And with R1 Mass Gainer, that has to be the creatine.

While a gram of extra creatine certainly isn’t going to hurt you, it’s not really going to help you either, at least not as much as taking 3-5g per day will.

I wouldn’t let Rule 1’s stinginess with the creatine put you off getting their R1 Mass Gainer, though.

All things considered, the inadequate creatine dosage really isn’t a big deal because you can just take more separately (creatine monohydrate is super cheap these days).

And honestly, given the quality of the protein and carbs contained within R1 Mass Gainer, I’m more than willing to let the lack of creatine slide.

Is This Rule 1 Weight Gainer The One For You?

If you’re a hardgainer who wants to put on quality weight, then I definitely recommend giving Rule 1 R1 Mass Gainer a try. It has over 1200 calories per shake—and the shakes taste really good—which is plenty for just about anyone to gain weight and lean muscle mass.

As I mentioned in my Rule 1 Mass Gainer review, I like how the formula contains both fast-acting and slow-release carbs. This way, you can get quick glycogen replenishment after your workouts and consistent energy thereafter.

Also, the protein is top quality. You get whey isolate, whey concentrate, and whey hydrolysate, which give your muscles a rapid supply of much-needed amino acids after a tough workout.

All in all, this Rule 1 Mass Gainer is a quality supplement that’s worth every penny. And if you can get it on offer like I did, the shakes will taste even sweeter!
