Welcome to my Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer review. I’ve been using Myprotein products for well over a decade at this point, and I’ve watched the brand evolve from a small, niche supplement company into a household name, both in the UK and abroad.

If you’ve read my other Myprotein weight gainer review, then you’ll know that I’m a big fan of their Impact Weight Gainer; it’s a simple yet highly effective supplement for adding quality mass to your frame.

However, for the budding bodybuilder looking for that bit extra, the Advanced Weight Gainer is a solid option because it contains more carbs and protein, and it also includes extra goodies like creatine and glutamine. More on those in a minute.

Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer Nutrition and Ingredients

The Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer ingredients

Myprotein is known for creating simple and affordable supplements that consist of only one or two ingredients. So I was quite surprised when I heard about their latest mass gainer, which they called Advanced Weight Gainer.

I’m all for simple mass-gaining formulas that get the job done, but for those who’re seeking a more “all-in-one” powder, shall we say, Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer is the way to go.

Per 125g of powder (3.5 scoops), you get:

  • 442 calories
  • 59g of carbs—both fast-acting and slow-release—from oat flour, fructose, and maltodextrin.
  • 6.9g of fat from MCT oil for quick energy
  • 36g of protein from whey concentrate, whey isolate, milk protein concentrate, and calcium caseinate
  • 5g of creatine monohydrate for increased power and strength
  • 5g of l-glutamine for muscle recovery and soreness reduction
  • A selection of vitamins and minerals for overall health

While Advanced Weight Gainer is more pricey than the likes of Impact Weight Gainer, you’re getting a lot of nutritional value for your money, and you won’t have to pay for other supplements like creatine or glutamine.

Plus, when you subscribe and save with Myprotein, you can get a lot of money off your supplements.

Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer Benefits

Every mass gainer has its pros and cons. So with that in mind, here are the advantages of using Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer.

Fantastic Carbs-to-Protein Ratio For Bulking

A person opening a bag of Advanced Weight Gainer from Myprotein

With most mass gainers, you’re basically paying for cheap carbs with a sprinkling of protein. In other words, they have terrible carb-to-protein ratios, which is to say hundreds of grams of carbohydrates with much less protein.

However, with Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer, you get 59g of carbs and 36g of protein, which is even better than a 2:1 ratio.

So, not only do you avoid paying for unnecessary carbs, you get plenty of protein as well.

This means that you don’t have to risk getting fat by stuffing your face with 1000+ calories just to get enough protein from your shake.

Contains 446 Mass-Building Calories

Gaining weight and appreciable muscle mass means eating in an energy surplus, which Advanced Weight Gainer by Myprotein makes really easy thanks to its 446-calorie formula.

I like that Advanced Weight Gainer has enough calories to trigger weight gain, but not so many that you feel bloated and nauseous after drinking your shake.

This also means that we’re not paying for a bunch of carbs that we don’t need. While everyone has different calorie requirements based on their body weight, activity level, and bulking goals, many mass gainers are basically just glorified carb powders with a sprinkling of protein.

Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer is what I’d call a sensible mass gainer. It’s designed for those who want to gain muscle mass and not just as much weight as humanly possible.

While a bit of fat gain is normal when bulking, you don’t actually want to get fat by overconsuming calories. With around 60g of carbs and 36g of protein per serving, Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer definitely has the right amount of nutrients for a successful bulking phase.

If you think you could benefit from a gainer that’s even higher in calories, then I recommend checking out my review of Myprotein The Gainer.

Multi-Phase Protein

Whey protein is great. But do you know what’s even better?

The Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer scoop

Two types of whey and a slow-digesting protein source.

Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer contains whey concentrate, whey isolate, and calcium caseinate.

As a result, your muscles will stay in a growing state for longer because they’re getting a consistent supply of essential amino acids.

This makes Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer an ideal choice if you don’t want to eat loads of small meals throughout the day but still want to stay in an anabolic, growing state rather than a catabolic one.

Optimal Dose of Creatine Monohydrate

What I’ve found from testing nearly 70 mass gainers is that many brands (you know, the hardcore bodybuilding ones) take their customers for such fools. What I mean is, that they brag about including creatine in their mass gainer, but then only include 1-2g.

Would it really hurt them to include a proper 5g dose? Probably not, but in the supplement industry, a lot of companies try to cut costs wherever they can, and if that means shortchanging us on creatine, then so be it.

Myprotein has a reputation for quality (which I do think is well-deserved, given their 15 years of experience). As such, their Advanced Weight Gainer contains an optimal 5g dose of creatine monohydrate so that you never have to worry about forgetting to take your creatine or weighing out the correct dose.

While some people prefer to take their creatine separately, including me, I’m happy to get two supplements in one as long as I’m getting the proper dose of each key ingredient.

Creatine is by far the best supplement for gaining strength quickly and building full, hard muscles, so it’s great to see that a science-focused company like Myprotein has stayed true to its evidence-based reputation by including a full 5-gram creatine serving.

5g of Glutamine For Muscle Recovery

You can consume all the BCAAs and glutamine in the world and still have muscle soreness the day after a hard workout, so it’s not like 5g of glutamine is going to transform your physique.

Still, extra recovery ingredients like l-glutamine can only ever help your results. After all, the faster you can recover, the sooner you can get back in the gym and stimulate your muscles with another growth-provoking training session.

Plenty of Vitamins & Minerals

In addition to effective macronutrition, Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer is also packed with important micronutrients to help your mind and body perform at their best.

For example, zinc helps you to maintain healthy testosterone levels, and magnesium aids your muscles during their post-workout recovery.

Similarly, vitamin C can help you to focus easier, and vitamin D can improve your mood if you’re deficient.

So while these vitamins & minerals may not bulk you up in the same way that the carbs, protein, and creatine will, they do help to create a healthy foundation from which you can build muscle at an optimal rate.

Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer Taste

View inside a bag of Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer

My Protein Advanced Weight Gainer is available in over 10 different flavours, and I must say, Myprotein really does have the most extensive flavour selection of any UK supplement company.

This time around, I went for Chocolate Mint, to see if it would satisfy my sweet tooth. And I have to say, these shakes taste great!

I wasn’t always a fan of Myprotein’s flavours, but they’ve really stepped their game up over the years and made some pretty big taste improvements. I’m glad to see that these flavour enhancements have followed through to their mass gainer range, all of which are really tasty.

I’d say that Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer is a bit sweeter than average but definitely not artificial or overpowering, which is just what I like.

As any of the Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer reviews will tell you, these shakes taste great with just water and are truly delicious with milk. I use whole milk for the extra calories, but you can use any milk that takes your fancy.

And if you want to make your own smoothies, then you can get the unflavoured version, which, as you would expect, has a very neutral taste that lends itself well to customised weight-gaining shakes.

If you’d prefer a shake that tastes more fruity than milky (like BCAAs or a pre workout rather than a mass gain shake), you can check out my review of Clear Whey Mass Gainer From Myprotein.

Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer Mixability

A person making their Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer shake

Because Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer is very calorie-dense, the shakes can be quite thick, which I personally like, but I know that not everyone does.

For this reason, Myprotein recommends mixing one serving (which is 125g of powder/3.5 scoops) with between 500-1000 ml of water or milk. This is quite a large liquid range, and it’s there to cater to different taste preferences.

If you prefer a thinner consistency, use closer to 1L of liquid. Or, if like me, you enjoy a thicker shake that’s not as liquid-heavy, use closer to 500ml.

All in all, the powder mixes quite well in a shaker bottle. At the very bottom of the shaker, you might get a bit of grittiness, but the simple fix is to shake it up more or, if you’re really particular, add a bit more liquid once you’re nearing the end of your mass gain shake and then shake the mixture again to smooth out the powder.

I’d definitely recommend investing in a 1 Litre MYPRO Smartshaker if you’re going to be drinking mass gainers on a regular basis. The extra 300ml capacity really makes a difference in how smooth your shakes are and how easy they are to mix.

Are There Any Drawbacks?

Side view of My Protein Advanced Weight Gainer

I’m racking my brain, and I can’t really think of any drawbacks from my Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer review.

Sure, the added creatine isn’t to everyone’s liking, but with an optimal 5g dose, you can’t really complain.

The full 3.5-scoop serving size might feel a bit much for some people, but this is just part of drinking weight gainers. And honestly, 125g isn’t an overly large serving size for a weight gainer.

I’ve tried products in the past that wanted me to use over 300g of powder. You can imagine how I felt after drinking those shakes!

Should You Start Taking Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer?

Closeup of Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer

If you’re looking for a supplement that’s not just a barebones mass gainer, then Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer is a great choice because it has an optimal 5g dose of creatine, protein of varying absorption speeds, and plenty of carbs.

This elite-level weight gain formula also benefits from digestive enzymes so that your body can make the best possible use of the quality calories, carbs, protein, and fats that you’re consuming on a daily basis.

Although you still need to train hard in the gym to gain the mass that you desire, this gainer is a great tool for facilitating an increase in body weight, strength, and muscularity.

And as I said in my Myprotein Advanced Weight Gainer review, this supplement tastes really good as well, which is always a bonus when you’re bulking.
