If you have dairy allergies or are looking for a rapidly absorbing mass gainer protein powder that’s naturally high in creatine, then you might have come across MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass Gainer.

As someone with near-perfect lactose tolerance who’s a big believer in the power of whey and casein, I was intrigued when I came across this 100% beef mass gainer.

I wanted to know the side effects, how it tasted, and what kind of results were possible

So after reading some mixed MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass reviews, I decided to see how good this all-beef weight gainer really is.

The MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass nutrition facts

MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass is a 100% beef mass gainer that utilises iSpike technology, micronparticulated carbohydrates, and fast-acting hydrolyzed beef protein isolate to promote maximum muscle anabolism.

It all sounds very promising—and a bit overwhelming, if I’m honest. A 500% increased spike in insulin is certainly very anabolic. The question is, will this actually lead to greater hypertrophy?

As for the Carnivor Mass ingredients, each 4-scoop serving contains:

  • 710 calories
  • 122g of carbohydrates
  • 50g of protein
  • 2g of fat
  • 0g of sugar
  • 200mcg of chromium
  • 580mg of sodium
  • Small amounts of calcium and potassium

The exact nutrition facts might differ depending on the flavour you get. For reference, these ingredients and their dosages are based on the strawberry flavour. More on the taste a bit later.

Straight out of the gate, I can see that Carnivor Protein Mass, which is a dairy free weight gainer, has solid macros for putting on muscle. The ratio of carbs to protein is ideal for bulking up, and there are plenty of calories for gaining weight, yet not an excessive amount, either. 

MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass Gainer Benefits

There are a lot of promising Carnivor Mass Protein reviews from people who’ve taken the supplement for a few weeks and months and experienced great results. So now I’ll go through each supposed benefit and see how Carnivor Mass stands up to scrutiny.

Superchargers Muscle Strength

Strength gains and muscle growth go hand in hand. So if Carnivor Mass can time its massive insulin spike with rapid nutrient delivery, surely that will help us get stronger relatively quickly?

That’s what a lot of users are reporting.

Perhaps some of these strength gains are also due to a novelty effect. What I mean is, if you’ve been drinking whey you’re whole lifting career and then switch to hydrolyzed beef protein, this could be somewhat of an anabolic signal due to the extra creatine and differing amino acid composition.

In their Carnivor Mass reviews, users also report that their workouts feel easier and that the regular weights feel lighter, indicating that their muscles are becoming stronger and developing an improved volume tolerance.

Increases Hypertrophy In 8 Weeks

According to MuscleMeds, research from the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research shows that male athletes who supplemented with beef protein isolate (BPI) gained 7.7 lbs of muscle in just 8 weeks. That’s nearly 1lb per week!

The placebo group only gained 0.7 lbs of muscle in 8 weeks.

Note that these gains appear to be in relation to their beef protein isolate powder and not their mass gainer. Still, since Carnivor Mass has 50g of beef protein isolate in its high-calorie formula, the results should hold true for the MuscleMeds mass gainer as well.

Guess what?

I found the study.

Yes, beef protein does increase muscle mass. But you know what? So does whey and chicken!

If you read the study, you can see that beef, chicken, and whey all produced comparable results, which isn’t surprising considering that they’re all quality protein sources. [1]

Interestingly, the group that took whey protein for the 8 weeks were the only one to significantly increase power output.

The study authors also noted that as long as the protein is high quality and taken at a sufficient post-workout dosage (46g), it doesn’t really matter which kind you take.

So, MuscleMeds is certainly not lying, and Carnivor Mass seems very promising. However, it’s not like it produced better results than whey or chicken.

Produces a Massive Insulin Spike

Hypertrophy essentially comes down to maximising muscle protein synthesis and minimising protein breakdown. A good protein powder/mass gainer should do both.

And while Carnivor Mass is very anabolic in that it produces a massive muscle protein synthesis (MPS) spike, I don’t know if it’s anti-catabolic

What I mean is, sure, you get a big MPS spike, but how long does that last for?

With milk protein, which is 80% casein, you don’t get such a big MPS spike, but you get a more consistent supply of amino acids. That’s why some brands use a combination of whey and casein in their gainers.

Personally, I don’t think that slow-digesting protein is particularly important in the context of a post-workout shake because the whole point of a post-workout shake is to get the nutrients to your muscles as quickly as possible, which is precisely what Carnivor Mass does.

If anything, you could argue that slow-digesting protein is counterintuitive and sub-optimal as a post-workout protein source.

And anyway, you’re probably going to be eating again sometime after your workout. So by the time the MPS spike from Carnivor Mass has died down, you’ll be getting more glycogen and amino acids from your food.

Eases Stress on Your Stomach and Digestive System

If milk-based proteins like whey don’t really agree with your stomach, then it could definitely be worth Giving MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass a try.

While some users reported that Carnivor Mass took a bit of getting used to, many said that they felt much better while taking beef protein than whey.

Not having stomach discomfort and digestion problems (Carnivor Mass utilises amylase and glucoamylase digestive enzymes) can make a big difference, not just in your workouts, but in your overall quality of life.

Obviously, we all react differently to supplements. So the only way to know whether you’re better off with a beef mass gainer or a whey-derived one is to give Carnivor Mass a try for a few weeks.

MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass Gainer Taste and Mixability

Now for the fun part of my MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass review—the taste test.

As with any mass gainer (and indeed, any nutritional shake), there are mixed taste reviews when it comes to Carnivor Mass Gainer. Some users thought it tasted great, while others said that it tasted awful. You can’t please everyone.

I personally fall somewhere in the middle.

Honestly, I was expecting it to taste terrible because of the beef protein, which is harder to flavour than whey. But, to my surprise, this Carnivor Mass protein actually tastes alright.

I went for the strawberry flavour, and while it definitely wasn’t the best-tasting shake of my life, it was definitely drinkable, especially when I mixed it with almond milk.

In terms of mixing, I found that Carnivor Mass requires more shaking than other mass gainers. It took a couple of attempts to get a lump-free shake, but I was able to solve this problem next time by using more liquid.

Honestly, if I were going to take this mass Carnivor protein on a regular basis, I’d probably make things easier for myself by using a blender.

How To Use MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass Gainer For The Best Results

While you can take Carnivor Mass Beef Protein any time of the day to get in those extra calories, the best time to take Carnivor Mass is definitely straight after your workout.

Because of the iSpike technology and insulin-amplifying Chromium 454 contained within Carnivor Mass, it has the ability to rapidly deliver the hydrolyzed beef protein isolate and micronparticulated carbohydrates to your muscles.

Additionally, being low in fat, the carbs and protein won’t be slowed down by a bunch of unnecessary fats, which tend to be absorbed very slowly.

While you can start with half a serving of Carnivor Mass to ease yourself into it, I really recommend having the full 4 scoops if you can. After all, the study participants who got great results from taking post-workout beef protein each drank 46g, which is slightly less than the 50g contained within Carnivor Mass Gainer and Signature Mass Gainer from bodybuilding.com.

So, for best results, you’ll want to take 4 scoops after your workout.

MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass Protein Side Effects

While there are thousands of positive MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass reviews that you can read, not everyone enjoyed the product.

For example, a minority of users complained that Carnivor Mass upset their stomach.

I didn’t feel any stomach discomfort, but then again, I’ve been taking weight gainers for years.

But what I will say is this: any weight gainer is going to cause gastric distress for some people.

While many people do better on beef protein than whey, the opposite could be true for some individuals.

If you’re worried about potential Carnivor Mass side effects, then just start with half a serving then work your way up.

Also, if you’re new to weight gainers or are a smaller person, then drinking 710 calories in one sitting might make you feel bloated. Again, this goes for any high-calorie shake, such as Applied Nutrition Mass Gainer or QuickMass, so I’m not picking on Carnivor Mass specifically here.

MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass vs Carnivor Mass Big Steer 1250

So, which is better, Carnivor Mass or Carnivor Mass Big Steer 1250?

Well, at a glance, Big Steer 1250 just looks like a higher-calorie version of Carnivor Mass. So if you’re a real hardgainer, then Big Steer 1250 could be a good option.

Per serving, Big Steer 1250 contains 1250 calories, 255g of carbs, 50g of protein, and 2.5g of fat.

So, as you can see, both products have the same amount of protein. 

Since Carnivor Mass is already pretty high in calories, I’d stick with the regular version. 

Definitely try Carnivor Mass before getting Big Steer 1250 to see how the beef protein works for you. 

Most people don’t need 1250 calories from a single shake, but I do appreciate that there are outliers who can really grow from extreme calorie and carb intakes.

The Verdict: Will MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass Protein Beef You Up?

In a way, I wasn’t the right person to do a Carnivor Mass Gainer review. Why?

Because I have complete lactose tolerance and can drink milk and whey all day just fine.

Of course, if you don’t feel great when drinking milk-based proteins, then Carnivor Mass could 

be a great option. It’s definitely worth a try, at the very least.

Still, on paper, I’m very impressed with what Carnivor Mass can do. It’s clear that MuscleMeds has engineered a unique mass gainer that’s capable of boosting your strength and increasing your muscle mass in a relatively short period of time.

Obviously, individual results will vary, but there is good research on beef protein, indicating that, like whey, it produces significant gains in around 8 weeks.

I hope that my MuscleMeds Carnivor Mass review was helpful. I’m glad that I gave it a try. It has a fantastic macronutrient breakdown and a solid ingredient profile. If I didn’t have grade-A lactose tolerance, then I’d definitely consider keeping it in my supplement stack.
