Mass Tech vs Serious Mass: Full Comparison

In my Mass Tech vs Serious Mass supplement showdown, I’ll be comparing the market leader in the weight gainer category (in terms of popularity) with MuscleTech Mass-Tech Elite and MuscleTech MassTech Extreme 2000 to see which mass gainer comes out on top.

If you’ve read my ON Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass review, then you’ll know that Serious Mass definitely has its pros and cons. For some people, the 1200+ calories could be just what they needed, but for others, the macros are way off from being optimal.

Please note that this comparison is based on the US version of Mass Tech. The UK/EU version, as I learned from checking out the ingredient label, only has 3g of creatine and also (like Serious Mass) uses maltodextrin as the sole carb source.

What Are The Differences Between Mass Tech and Serious Mass?

First off, I’m going to compare Serious Mass to the regular MuscleTech Mass Tech (now known as Mass Tech Elite), and then I’ll compare it to Extreme 2000.

The first difference is that Serious Mass has 1263 calories and 251g of carbs, while Mass Tech “only” has 831 calories and 132g of carbs. Mass Tech also has different carbohydrates (such as oat bran, quinoa, maltodextrin, and isomaltulose), whereas Serious Mass just uses maltodextrin.

Serious Mass has 50g of protein per serving from whey and calcium caseinate, ensuring that your muscles receive an optimal blend of rapid-release and slow-digesting amino acids.

Similarly, Mass Tech has protein from whey, milk (which is 80% casein), and egg, but it has 63g per serving. So Mass Tech is much more protein-dense than Serious Mass, especially when you consider that it has 400 fewer calories.

Serious Mass has 3g of creatine per serving, whereas Mass Tech has 10g per serving, so you could say that one has too little creatine and the other has too much! 

Now, if you’re training really hard and want to saturate your muscles with creatine, then taking 10g per day could be beneficial, but you don’t need that much daily creatine in the long term.

The final nutritional difference is that Serious Mass includes 25 different vitamins and minerals, whereas Mass Tech doesn’t. Although you should be getting most of your micronutrients from whole foods, you could certainly say that having additional vitamins and minerals is better than drinking 1200 calories that are devoid of micronutrients.

Mass Tech Extreme 2000 vs Serious Mass

A Mass Tech Extreme 2000 vs Serious Mass comparison is one of the only times that Serious Mass seems small!

And that’s because Mass Tech Extreme has a whopping 2,110 calories and 455g of carbs per serving.

The rest of the formula is pretty similar to the “standard” Mass Tech formula because you also get 10g of creatine.

However, Mass Tech Extreme 2000, despite having more than twice the number of calories, actually has less protein than Mass Tech Elite!

Still, 60g of protein is plenty, but I’d hate to have to drink 2000+ calories just to get that much protein.

The reality is that, while Mass Tech Extreme 2000 is certainly more calorie-dense than Serious Mass, it’s a step too far for most people. Sure, you could just take half a serving, but then you’re getting 30g of protein for 225g of carbs, which isn’t a great ratio.

I don’t think that many people should be getting 2000 calories from liquid sources, which is why I recommend Serious Mass over Mass Tech Extreme 2000.

Differences In Ingredient Quality and Nutrition

As I’ve already noted in this Serious Mass vs Mass Tech comparison, both of these supplements use quality ingredients, it’s just that they use different doses.

So, if you want a really calorie-dense weight gainer with loads of calories, Serious Mass is the better choice.

But if you want fewer calories and more protein, then Mass Tech is the way to go.

Although Mass Tech is considerably more protein-dense than Serious Mass, many hardgainers don’t struggle to get enough protein; they struggle to get enough calories. And besides, 63g of protein is unlikely (in the context of one sitting) to offer any additional benefits to the 50g of protein already contained in Serious Mass.

Both supplements utilise MCTs for fats, which are easy to digest, but they're both still relatively low in fat overall, which makes sense considering that too much fat would be hard to make into a powder. 

As mentioned, Mass Tech does have more varied carb sources than Serious Mass, but it does still seem to use maltodextrin as the primary carbohydrate source, which is the norm for most high-calorie gainers.

Differences In Taste and Mixability

Mass gainers aren’t exactly renowned for their great taste, but having taste tested at least 60 different weight gainers, I can tell you that both Serious Mass and Mass Tech taste pretty good.

I’ve tried both gainers before, but to make this taste test comparison as fair as possible, I ordered both in a chocolate derivation (Chocolate Peanut Butter for Serious Mass and Chocolate Fudge Cake for Mass Tech).

Overall, I’d have to say that Mass Tech tastes a bit smoother than Serious Mass and seems to have a more authentic flavour. Both are certainly drinkable, but I personally just found Mass Tech that bit more enjoyable to drink.

Mass Tech also mixes easier than Serious Mass because the serving size is 100g smaller. So while I recommend using a blender for both shakes to ensure a smooth consistency, you can probably get away with mixing Mass Tech in a shaker bottle, which definitely isn’t the case for Serious Mass.

You can, of course, get both supplements and see which you prefer. But I think the choice is pretty simple, and it mainly depends on what you want from a mass gainer.

Do you want more protein? Or would you prefer the extra carbs and calories?

If you want a weight gainer that’s extremely protein-dense, then go with MuscleTech Mass Tech (but forget about the Extreme 2000 version).

On the other hand, if you want a gainer that has plenty of protein but even more carbs and calories, then I recommend going with Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass.
