I’ve tested around 70 different mass gainers, and based on my results, most of them don’t contain creatine. However, some weight gainers do contain creatine, so you always need to check the label.

While some brands provide a proper dose of creatine in their mass gainers, others only include one or two grams, which isn’t enough for most people.

For this reason, most people, including me, prefer to take separate creatine and mass gainer supplements. This way, you can customise the dosage and timing, and also ensure that you’re using a quality creatine source.

On the contrary, when you take a mass gainer that’s preformulated with creatine, you can’t be sure that you’re getting a pure form of creatine monohydrate.

Can You Take Creatine With a Mass Gainer?

Yes, you can definitely take creatine and a mass gainer, whether that be at the exact same time or at separate times during the same day.

In fact, if you’re bulking, then taking creatine and a mass gainer is a fantastic idea because, as I’ll explain in just a moment, these are the two most effective supplements for gaining weight that have ever been invented.

While you can take creatine at any time of the day, most bodybuilders recommend taking it immediately after your workout to take advantage of the post-workout insulin spike.

So, when you combine your creatine with a mass gainer, you’re likely going to speed up creatine delivery, which can only be a good thing for your fatigued muscles.

Physically mixing your creatine into your mass gainer shake is a great idea because it makes taking your creatine really easy and simple. You don’t even taste the powder, and yet you still get to enjoy 100% of the benefits.

Which Is Better For Bulking, Creatine or a Mass Gainer?

Both creatine and mass gainers are good for bulking up in their own way, so it’s hard to say that one is outright better than the other.

While creatine might lead to a faster body weight increase initially due to the fact that it makes you hold water (it draws water into your muscle cells), mass gainers definitely lead to more long-term weight gain than creatine if you take them consistently.

After all, creatine doesn’t have any calories, so once you’ve experienced that initial body weight increase, you won’t gain any more weight from taking it.

On the other hand, if drinking a mass gainer puts your body in a calorie surplus, then you can keep gaining weight and muscle mass for a very long period of time, which is why I take weight gainers to this day even though I’m no longer skinny.

Do You Need To Take Creatine and a Mass Gainer If You’re Skinny?

No, you don’t need to take both creatine and a mass gainer if you’re skinny, but it would certainly be helpful to take at least one.

If you want to gain muscle optimally, then mass gainers are the most optional supplement out of the two. Why?

Because mass gainers are simply a convenient liquid calorie source; you can get plenty of protein, carbs, and fats from your diet if you have the appetite and the luxury of time. 

However, many skinny guys lack the appetite to get enough weight-gaining calories from their regular meals, meaning that weight gainers are often the difference between seeing results and making no progress at all.

Creatine, on the other hand, is a must-take supplement if you want to do things optimally. While it’s possible to consume creatine from your whole foods, you almost certainly won’t be able to get enough creatine from red meat to get the results that you’re after.

So, ideally, you’ll take both mass gainer and creatine if you’re a hardgainer. However, if you could only take one, you’d be wise to go with creatine.

So, when you combine creatine and a mass gainer, you get a very powerful weight-gaining effect, which is why I recommend taking both of them, especially if you’re on the slimmer side.
