In this head-to-head Dymatize Super Mass Gainer vs Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass comparison, I’ll be outlining the differences between these two very similar supplements.

As I said in my Dymatize Super Mass Gainer review, a 1200+ calorie shake can often be just what a hardaginer needs. But with multiple options on the market—all claiming to be a cut above the rest—it can be hard to find the right product.

So, is ON Serious Mass good? Absolutely. It’s the face of the weight gainer category for a reason. But, as time goes on, there are more and more supplements in competition with this ever-popular supplement.

The Differences Between Dymatize Super Mass Gainer and Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass

Calorically and nutritionally, Dymatize Super Mass Gainer and ON Serious Mass are very similar, so they’re quite hard to separate.

Nonetheless, there are a couple of differences between them that might sway your decision one way or the other.

  • Dymatize Super Mass Gainer has 17 more calories than Serious Mass (1280 vs 1263)
  • Serious Mass has slightly more carbs than Dymatize Super Mass Gainer (251g vs 243g)
  • Dymatize Super Mass Gainer has 2 grams more protein than Serious Mass (52g vs 50g)
  • Dymatize Super Mass Gainer has more fat than Serious Mass (10g vs 5.5g)
  • Dymatize Super Mass Gainer has less sugar than Serious Mass (22g vs 26g)
  • Dymatize Super Mass Gainer has 5 added vitamins and minerals, whereas Serious Mass contains 25 different vitamins and minerals.
  • Dymatize Super Mass Gainer has a 336g serving size, while Serious Mass has a 334g serving size.

With similarities like this (and let’s not forget that they each have 3g of creatine), it’s no wonder that people want to compare them!

One difference in terms of ingredients is that Super Mass Gainer contains whey concentrate, whey isolate, whey hydrolysate, casein, and milk protein, whereas Serious Mass just has whey concentrate and calcium caseinate.

While there may be advantages to having extra types of protein, they’re all very similar, and likely have a similar amount of BCAAs and EEAs to the protein contained within Serious Mass.

For me, Serious Mass tastes good, whereas Super Mass Gainer tastes great. I’ve always thought that Dymatize had a knack for creating fantastic flavours, and their Super Mass Gainer is no exception.

Don’t get me wrong, I can easily enjoy a Serious Mass shake at any time of the day, but there’s something about Super Mass Gainer that just tastes more authentic.

Of course, this part of my Dymatize vs Optimum Nutrition mass gainer comparison is entirely subjective, so you might have different opinions on the taste.

In terms of mixability, though, I’d say that both gainers are pretty much equal in that you’ll need a blender to mix them both. So while using a blender might be a bit inconvenient, it’s the only way to get a smooth shake when you’re dealing with 300+ grams of powder.

If you really don’t want to use a blender, then you could always put half a serving in one shaker bottle and the other half in a second shaker cup. This way, you can easily take your gainer to work with you or to the gym.

While I didn’t feel especially bloated after drinking either shake (now, bear in mind that I’m very much used to taking mass gainers on a regular basis), I did feel full, which is probably a good sign that these supplements are as calorie-dense as they claim to be.

Overall, drinking Dymatize Super Mass Gainer was a pleasurable experience, especially after a long and tiring workout. And while I still enjoyed drinking Serious Mass, it wasn’t as delicious as its competitor.

Dymatize Super Mass Gainer vs Serious Mass: Nutrition and Ingredients

As I explained earlier in my Dymatize Super Mass Gainer vs ON Serious Mass comparison, both supplements have extremely similar nutrition information and very similar ingredients.

Both mass gainers use maltodextrin, which is a rapidly digested carbohydrate source suited to the post-workout period. 

While drinking 200+ grams of maltodextrin might not be ideal for everyone, sometimes a hardgainer just needs those easy, empty calories to gain weight and overcome their fast metabolism.

Super Mass Gainer has slightly more protein per serving than Serious Mass (52g vs 50g) and also uses a wider variety of protein sources, such as whey isolate, whey hydrolysate, and micellar casein.

Whether these extra protein sources offer any additional benefit to the whey concentrate and calcium caseinate provided by Serious Mass is unclear. Since both supplements have fast-acting and slow-digesting proteins, having all the extra derivations of whey protein might not necessarily lead to better results.

For fats, Super Mass Gainer uses sunflower oil, whereas Serious Mass uses MCTs. Again, not a major difference, given the minimal amount of fat contained within each of the formulas. But If I had to choose between sunflower oil and MCTs, I’d go with the MCTs because of the quick energy that they provide.

Finally, both of these gainers contain 3 grams of creatine per serving, which is a decent dose, but I’d prefer a full 5 grams. So if you’re the same, you’ll either need to take an extra 2 grams of creatine yourself or choose a different mass gainer entirely.

Which One Is Better Value?

Serious Mass is usually cheaper than Super Mass Gainer. So, considering the similarity of the supplements, you’ll probably want to go with Serious Mass if you’re bulking on a budget.

However, since I prefer the taste of Super Mass Gainer, I’d be inclined to spend a little bit more for the nicer taste. But that’s just me. As I said earlier, you might think that Serious Mass tastes better than Super Mass Gainer, so you may want to order a tub of each supplement to try out the flavours for yourself.

Serious Mass is more popular than Super Mass Gainer, but both are great choices that you really can’t go wrong with.

While a standard tub of Super Mass Gainer is bigger than a standard tub of Serious Mass, you’ll still get more value for money with Serious Mass most of the time, but prices can change.

The calorie content and macronutrient compositions are virtually identical, with the only real difference being that Super Mass Gainer has more types of protein than Serious Mass. But as I said, these extra protein sources are unlikely to offer much, if any, benefit compared to those provided by Serious Mass.

Overall, I’d say that ON Serious Mass offers better value for money, and while I did prefer the taste of Dymatize Super Mass Gainer, I really appreciate the affordable bulking calories provided by Serious Mass.
