Can you take mass gainer and whey protein together? Yes, you can definitely take mass gainer and whey protein powder on the same day. This is actually a great way to consume more calories and protein for building muscle.

You can also literally take weight gainer and whey protein together if you wish to increase the protein content of your mass gainer. But most of the time, you won’t need to do this because mass gainers usually have plenty of protein themselves.

You can also check out my article on the difference between whey protein and mass gainer if you’d just like to use one of the supplements and want to see which is right for you.

Reasons To Take Mass Gainer and Whey Protein Together

You can take mass gainers and whey protein together at different times of the day to boost both your calorie intake and your protein intake.

For example, you could have a whey protein shaker after your workout so that you can get some amino acids into your bloodstream as quickly as possible.

Then, at some other time during the day, you could take a mass gainer to help put your body in a calorie surplus.

Since using whey for weight gain isn’t as efficient as taking a dedicated weight gainer, it’s crucial to understand the importance of eating in a calorie surplus.

For this reason, you should consume your mass gainer in addition to your whole food meals and not in replacement of them. This way, you can ensure your body is in a calorie surplus, which is necessary for successful weight gain.

You might also want to mix your whey protein into your mass gainer to increase the protein content of your mass gainer. This is particularly useful if you have a really carb-heavy mass gainer and want to improve its carb-to-protein ratio.

A cheaper way of doing this is to mix your mass gainer with milk, which will give you a few hundred extra calories as well as plenty more protein.

Reasons Not To Take Mass Gainer and Protein Powder Together

If your mass gainer already has plenty of protein (more than 40 grams), then there’s no need to physically mix whey protein into your weight gainer shake because more protein isn’t always better.

Also, if you’re taking a mass gainer alongside three or more wholefood meals, then you’re probably getting plenty of protein already, meaning that whey protein powder isn’t necessary.

So while you can certainly keep a tub of protein powder handy, there’s no advantage to consuming extra protein once you already have enough, so using extra whey could just end up being a waste of money.

Still, I can understand why some mass gainer users still like to have a simple whey protein shake after their workout. However, mass gainers usually have plenty of whey protein of their own and, with their fast-acting carbs, give you all of the post-workout nutrition that you could need (except creatine).

Is It Bad To Take Weight Gainer and Whey Protein on the Same Day?

It’s definitely not bad to take a weight gainer and whey protein during the same day, but it might be unnecessary.

Both whey protein and weight gainers are supplements, meaning that they shouldn’t replace your regular meals.

And while your muscles certainly can’t tell the difference between protein from fish and chicken and protein from whey and weight gainers, wholefood protein sources contain other important nutrients that weight gainers and whey protein lack.

So, by all means, use mass gainers and whey protein together to meet your calorie and macro targets, but don’t use them to replace all of your regular meals.

Who Should Take Whey Protein and Weight Gainer Together?

Loads of mass gainers

If you have a very high protein requirement, then taking both mass gainer and whey protein can be a useful way to ensure that you’re getting enough quality amino acids in your diet.

Also, if you’re busy and have an on-the-go lifestyle, then you may want to get more of your protein from the likes of whey and weight gainers rather than chicken, fish, and beef.

Although you still need to eat healthy whole foods, it’s fine to get a big chunk of your protein from supplements so long as your diet contains plenty of vitamins and minerals.

You could also use whey and weight gainers together if you were whipping up a mega-calorie, protein-packed shake. In this case, you’d actually mix your mass gainer and protein powder together to create a huge muscle-building milkshake.

In Conclusion

As you’ve learned, it’s completely possible to take mass gainer and whey protein together, either on the same day or literally together in the same shake.

Obviously, just because you can take both supplements doesn’t mean you should. While getting enough protein is crucial, you don’t want to overconsume protein at the expense of fats or carbohydrates.

As such, you might be able to make great progress by just taking a weight gainer. After all, most mass gainers have plenty of whey protein!
