Are you on the lookout for a mass gainer that will reliably support your weight-gaining ambitions? Well, Critical Mass seems to fit the bill for a lot of people. But does it live up to the hype?

We set out to create a detailed Applied Nutrition Critical Mass review to find out just how good this British weight gainer really is.

The gainer has an impressive formulation with whey protein, complex carbohydrates, crucial amino acids like glutamine and leucine, as well as creatine to boost your performance while increasing muscle mass. Furthermore, the presence of the DigeZyme enzyme complex helps promote smooth digestion.

While Critical Mass is a good option for individuals striving to gain size during the bulking phase, those looking to shed fat or just maintain their physique are probably better off with regular whey protein.

Applied Nutrition Mass Gainer Nutrition Facts

  • Calories: Each serving of Critical Mass packs in 566 size-building calories, which is necessary to help you gain mass as a hard gainer.
  • Protein: Comprising high-quality whey and milk proteins, this mass gainer supports muscle protein synthesis with a solid 42g of protein per serving.
  • Carbohydrates: This Applied Nutrition mass gainer provides you with 75g of carbs to fuel your hard training sessions and satisfy your calorie requirements for size gain.
  • Fats: Fat is not the enemy. It’s calorie-dense (ideal for bulking), and we need it for hormonal health. That’s why I’m happy to report that Critical Mass Gainer has 10g of fat derived from MCT powder and CLA.
  • Creatine: Not everyone wants creatine in their gainer, so the 3g of creatine monohydrate included in Critical Mass might be enough to put some people off. Still, for those trying to gain size on a tight budget, added creatine can definitely be a good thing.
  • Glutamine: Critical Mass Gainer is great for both weight gain and muscle recovery as it has 5g of glutamine peptides per serving.
  • HMB: Known to preserve muscle mass and support recovery from hard training, HMB is included in Critical Mass at a dose of 2g per serving.

Applied Nutrition Critical Mass Ingredients

Organic Ground Oats

Organic ground oats serve as a rich source of carbohydrates and dietary fibre, providing your body with slow-digesting energy. This makes them perfect for fuelling your workouts and supporting the sustained growth of muscle mass.

Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is another carbohydrate source in Applied Nutrition Critical Mass gainer, complementing the organic ground oats with its faster digestibility. This easily digestible carb is great for replenishing glycogen stores, making it ideal post-workout when you need quick calories to prevent muscle breakdown.

Whey Proteins

This Applied Nutrition weight gainer boasts a sizeable 42g protein serving per 150g of powder, meaning that roughly ⅓ of the supplement is protein. In addition to milk protein isolate, whey is included in both its isolate and concentrate forms, leading to a dense dose of amino acids that are ideal for lean gaining during a bulking cycle.

The Applied Nutrition Critical Mass ingredients

Creatine Monohydrate

Depending on which formula you buy, you’ll get either 3g or 5g of creatine per serving. Although many people prefer to take their creatine as a standalone supplement, there’s no harm in getting a full 5g of creatine included in your weight gainer.

As I said earlier in this Applied Nutrition mass gainer review, you can save a decent chunk of change by getting yourself a gainer, like Critical Mass, that already gives you all the creatine you need.

HMB

HMB (beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate) has been shown to support muscle recovery and preserve muscle mass during periods of intense training. In Applied Nutrition Lean Mass Gainer, you'll find 2g of HMB per serving.

CLA

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a naturally occurring fatty acid, often found in foods like eggs, milk, and beef—and now in this Applied Nutrition weight gainer as well.

Researchers believe that CLA supports fat loss and lean muscle development, providing a balance between shedding unwanted fat and gaining muscle mass (in other words, it’s ideal for lean bulking). This Critical Mass Gainer contains 3g of CLA powder per serving.

MCT Powder

The Applied Nutrition Critical Mass Gainer ingredients

MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) is another beneficial fat source that Applied Nutrition has in its Critical Mass formula. MCTs are known for their quick absorption and fast energy release, acting as an additional fuel source to support your training, recovery and muscle growth.

Another gainer that benefits from MCTs is AllMax QuickMass, which, being a US product, is more expensive in the UK than Critical Mass.

Digestive enzyme complex

Bulking can often leave you feeling bloated. That’s why I’m thrilled to see that the team over at Applied Nutrition have included a 40mg digestive enzyme complex in their weight gain formula. It really helps you make the most of all those extra calories that you’re eating.

Applied Nutrition Critical Mass Mixability and Taste

The Applied Nutrition Critical Mass ingredient label

So, you're interested in the mixability and taste of Applied Nutrition Critical Mass, right? Let's see if it’s drinkable or not.

In their Critical Mass reviews, many customers praised Critical Mass for how smoothly it mixes and for its appealing taste—and we have to agree. Most of the time, you’ll have no need to worry about unpleasant clumps or gritty textures.

Of course, as with any calorie-dense shake, there were a few users who had trouble mixing Critical Mass. But they were firmly in the minority. I certainly had no trouble whipping up my Critical Mass shakes.

In terms of taste, I really enjoyed the chocolate flavour, especially when I added some milk. My shakes were creamy without being overpowering, which is exactly what you want from a weight gainer.

When it comes to mixing the shake, you're good to go with either a blender or a shaker bottle. Just remember to follow the instructions for the correct water-to-powder ratio, and you'll be sipping a tasty, lump-free shake in no time.

How To Get The Most From Applied Nutrition Critical Mass

Take 2-3 Servings Per Day

To maximise your results with Applied Nutrition Critical Mass, take 2-3 servings per day during a bulking phase. This will ensure you're getting enough protein, carbs, and calories to support muscle growth and recovery.

All you need to do is mix 150g of powder (2.5 scoops) with around 500 ml of milk or water. This can easily be done in any good shaker bottle.

You can also read our MHP Up Your mass review if you’re looking for a shake that has over 1,000 calories. Obviously, drinking multiple Critical Mass shakes per day will get you at least 1,000 extra calories too.

Mix With Milk For More Protein And Calories

If you're looking to boost your protein and calorie intake even further, consider mixing your critical mass shake with milk instead of water. This will provide extra calories and protein to your shake to help support your muscle-building goals.

Also, you’ll get an even more creamy taste, which is great if you have a sweet tooth like me.

Drink Your Shakes Consistently

Consistency is key when it comes to getting the most out of your supplements. Be sure to drink your Applied Nutrition Critical Mass shakes every day, even on your rest days (your muscles still grow on rest days!). This will help maintain a steady supply of nutrients to your muscles and promote recovery and growth.

Don't Forget To Train Hard

Lastly, remember that supplements alone won't make you gain size. Your training plays a critical role in your gains because it’s the heavy lifting that actually stimulates the hypertrophy. So, make sure to train hard and consistently, focusing on compound movements and progressive overload to stimulate muscle growth.

The Verdict: Should You Try This Applied Nutrition Mass Gainer?

The powder contained in a tub of Applied Nutrition Critical Mass Gainer

Applied Nutrition's Critical Mass is an option worth considering for those focused on lean gaining. By using a blend of proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats, Critical Mass Gainer provides a balanced formula for supporting your muscle growth and recovery.

The taste of the product is also good, which is always a bonus when it comes to mass gainers, as some can be less than pleasant to consume regularly.

However, keep in mind that this mass gainer is not meant for everyone. Some people just don’t want the added creatine in their shakes!

Additionally, when it comes to mass gainers, it's a good idea to compare different products on the market. You might find that other options are more suited to your preferences or specific needs. So, should you give Applied Nutrition's Critical Mass a go? It's certainly worth considering if it aligns with your weight-gaining goals!

Hopefully, my Applied Nutrition Critical Mass review helped you to decide whether or not this weight gainer is right for you.
